The reason is the shortage of aviation fuel
Airlines are canceling flights due to rising fuel prices. Dutch airline KLM announced the cancellation of 80 round trips from Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport in May. German Lufthansa and American United Airlines have also reduced routes for profitability reasons, reports Deutsche Welle.
Analytical company Cirium warns that global airline capacity will decrease by about 3% in May instead of the expected growth of 4-6% in 2026.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA) indicates that aviation fuel reserves in Europe will last for about six weeks. The shortage of aviation fuel is caused by the war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of global oil trade passes.
