Will flights start to be canceled closer to summer?

The reason is the shortage of aviation fuel.

In Europe, flights may start to be canceled as early as May due to a fuel shortage, Deutsche Welle reports. The International Air Transport Association warned that due to a deficit of aviation fuel caused by the war between the U.S. and Israel against Iran, the first flight cancellations in Europe could occur as early as the end of May. The head of the association, Willie Walsh, reminded that this is already happening in Asia.

German Economy Minister Katharina Reiche assured that there is "no shortage of kerosene" in Germany, as the fuel is produced at domestic refineries and the country is not solely dependent on imports. The industry union Fuels and Energy also stated that it currently does not see any disruptions.

However, the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry (BDL) views the situation more seriously. BDL has already demanded that the oil industry and fuel storage operators "urgently" report on the available volumes of kerosene.

BDL suggests recognizing short-term flight cancellations or delays due to detours caused by airspace closures, as well as due to refueling, as "extraordinary circumstances," which would deprive passengers of the right to compensation.
