More than 26 million people in Iran have voluntarily signed up for military service, state broadcaster IRIB reported on Wednesday, according to LETA citing DPA.
This voluntary registration is part of the campaign "Donate Your Life."
Iran has a population of about 90 million, so those who have voluntarily signed up for military service make up approximately 29% of the population.
State radio reported that volunteers will be stationed alongside the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the army. There are also plans to create human chains to protect potential targets.
IRIB reported that among the registered volunteers are Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, most of the ministers of his government, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, as well as many officials, athletes, and cultural figures.
