The European Commission urged the governments of European Union countries to strengthen security measures to prevent the infiltration of terrorists from the Middle East into the EU.

This is stated in a letter from the European Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ylva Johansson, to the interior ministers of EU member states, which was reviewed by the publication Euractiv.

In the document, Johansson stated that EU countries are not providing adequate protection for critical infrastructure and must be prepared for various scenarios in light of the conflict in the Middle East.

She urged countries to implement the EU directive from 2022 on the protection of national infrastructure facilities, including energy networks and financial institutions, which could become "easy targets" for attacks.

The Commissioner also emphasized the importance of the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES), which provides for the registration of travelers' biometric data, noting that it should not leave "security gaps." According to her, this is particularly relevant due to the possible return of foreign fighters to Europe.

Additionally, the European Commission will allocate €5 million to assist EU countries in protecting Jewish sites that may become targets of terrorist attacks and is considering increasing this funding.

Earlier, representatives of the European Union also warned about the risks of an energy crisis due to the conflict in the Middle East and the potential economic consequences for EU countries.
