According to the New York Times, two transport planes carrying the rescued pilot and special forces from Iran got stuck inside the country and were destroyed. After that, three new planes were sent for evacuation.
According to the newspaper, the planes were destroyed to prevent them from falling into the hands of Iranian forces. Iranian media reports that the initial planes got stuck on a temporary runway created by American military in a remote area of the country.
