Trump decided to build a ballroom in the White House; court ordered to stop construction

An American judge ordered on Tuesday to stop the construction of a large ballroom planned by U.S. President Donald Trump in the White House, during which the historic East Wing was completely demolished, LETA reports citing AFP.

Trump is the "manager" of the White House, however, "he is still not its owner," said Judge Richard Leon, noting that Congressional approval is necessary for the project to proceed.

Leon issued the ruling while considering a lawsuit from the National Trust for Historic Preservation in the United States.

In response to a reporter's question about the judge's decision on Tuesday, Trump stated: "He is very mistaken."

The president expressed confidence that Congressional involvement in this project is not required, partly because it is funded by donors rather than taxpayers.

The administration filed an appeal just a few hours after the ruling was made.

Last year, Trump shocked many by suddenly ordering the demolition of part of the White House, claiming that the residence needed a large venue for events.

Since then, the president has repeatedly returned to the topic of building the ballroom, often shifting to it even when discussing other issues, such as the war with Iran.

Trump claims that the costs of constructing the ballroom, initially estimated at $200 million and now reaching up to $400 million, are covered by private donations, including those from wealthy supporters and several corporations.
