Prime Minister Inga Ruginene confirmed on Tuesday that the drone that fell more than a day ago in the Varėna district was Ukrainian and intended for an attack on a target in Russian territory.
"The drone that crossed our airspace and entered the Varėna district was a Ukrainian drone. It is related to the operation that the Ukrainians were conducting that night against Russia," the Prime Minister said to reporters on Tuesday after a meeting of the National Security Commission.
"We can already confidently say that it was a wayward drone," she added.
Ruginene commented on the incident after a drone entered Lithuania's airspace and fell into Lake Lavysas in the Varėna district on Monday morning. Military radars did not detect the object.
Interestingly, two hours before the Prime Minister's statement, the Lithuanian prosecutor's office announced that the incident in the Varėna district, where the drone fell and exploded in the lake, would be investigated as part of a case regarding potential war crimes by Russia in Ukraine.
