The European Union is now better prepared to control migration than it was 10 years ago.
The President of the Russian Federation is the main culprit behind the influx of migrants to Europe. This was stated by the European Commissioner for Home Affairs and Migration, Magnus Brunner, as reported by the Financial Times. "Behind these large migration flows is always Putin. It is always Vladimir Putin," he said.
The European Commissioner also reminded of the support that Putin provided to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. The civil war in Syria triggered the migration crisis in Europe in 2015-2016. Brunner noted that over 2 million people applied for asylum during that time.
The second large-scale migration flow is associated with the arrival of refugees from Ukraine to the EU. After the war unleashed by the Russian Federation, about 4.3 million Ukrainians received temporary protection in the EU.
Speaking about the war in Iran, the European Commissioner noted that there is currently no influx of refugees to Europe from that country. "But, of course, we must remain vigilant, as the situation can change from day to day," he emphasized, adding that Putin supports the regime in Tehran.
The European Commissioner added that the EU is "much better prepared now than 10 years ago," citing procedures for asylum seekers at the borders and new biometric border checks. "Now we can see who, when, and where is entering the European Union," he stressed.
