Iran Could Use Space Rocket to Strike Diego Garcia Base

Iran, according to experts, could have utilized a space launch vehicle to increase the range of ballistic missiles fired towards the British base Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The distance to the target is nearly 2500 km, exceeding the previously stated limitations of Iranian missile systems.

Previously, the range of Iran's ballistic missiles was estimated at about 2000 km; however, according to U.S. officials, Tehran's space program may allow for an expansion of the weapons' range. In particular, the Simorgh launch vehicle is viewed as a system capable of increasing flight distance at the expense of accuracy in the terminal phase.

Experts note that the technologies for space launches and ballistic missiles are largely similar. According to analysts, such systems are launched to a high altitude and then return to the target at high speed. The existence of a space program, specialists emphasize, effectively indicates the presence of military missile capabilities as well.

Retired Royal Navy Commander Steve Prest stated that such launches could be seen as a demonstration of capabilities and a signal of a foreign policy nature. He noted that this could be a response to statements about potential military pressure and a demonstration of Iran's readiness to further develop its technologies.
