Финские парни не спешат впрягаться в лямку.

170,000 working-age residents have virtually no work experience in the last 10 years.

In the Finnish labor market, only 23 percent of the unemployed have a chance of being quickly employed.

The highest chances of employment are for those under 50 years old, who have education and work experience, and who have not faced long-term unemployment.

At the same time, 42 percent of the unemployed are extremely difficult to employ, according to a recent statistical analysis by the Business Life Analysis Center EVA.

About 170,000 working-age residents of Finland have virtually no work experience in the last 10 years.

Problems in residential areas and among youth

Unemployment is particularly concentrated in residential areas. In Finland, there are 32 districts with at least 1,000 unemployed. For example, in the Kontula–Vesala–Kivikko districts of Helsinki, there are almost as many unemployed as in the entire province of Central Pohjanmaa.

Structural changes are now also affecting "white-collar workers." Over the past year, the number of unemployed classified as specialists has increased by almost 11,000.

Long-term unemployment among youth has nearly doubled over three years. At the same time, the number of first jobs for entering the labor market has decreased.

  • Young people need to gain either education or work experience, preferably both, to prevent prolonged unemployment and social isolation, notes the author of the analysis, EVA expert and consultant Jussi Pyökkönen.
