In a French town, candidates with unusual surnames for France will face off in the second round of local elections, reports the BBC.
According to him, the current mayor of Arcy-sur-Aube, Charles Hitler, who heads the center-right list, is competing against customs officer Antoine Renaud-Zelensky from the far-right movement "Patriots" and the already eliminated candidate Annie Succa.
"This is complete madness. Throughout my life, people have occasionally joked about my last name. Sometimes people drew mustaches on my campaign posters. It never mattered much. But now it has gotten out of control. I have seen articles online saying that '37% of Arcy residents are Hitler supporters!' My wife is in tears," the mayor stated.
In the first round, Hitler led by a narrow margin.
As reported by the BBC, social media has been flooded with jokes about the "battle between Hitler and Zelensky," which has sparked a wave of unwanted attention to the town.
The mayor himself complains that people are only discussing the last names and not the city's politics.
