Cuba hopes to reach an agreement with the U.S., and this could happen fairly quickly, U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday, according to LETA citing AFP.
“Cuba also wants to make a deal, and I think that fairly soon we will either make a deal or do whatever we have to do,” Trump said to reporters aboard Air Force One.
“We are talking to Cuba, but first we will deal with Iran. So I think something will happen with Cuba fairly quickly,” the U.S. president noted.
Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed on Friday that his government has been negotiating over “bilateral disagreements” with the U.S., but did not provide details about the nature of these negotiations.
In January, Trump imposed an oil blockade against Cuba, restricting fuel supplies due to what he claimed were “extraordinary threats” that Cuba poses to the United States.
Washington has maintained an economic embargo against Cuba for decades.
The Trump administration's heightened attention to Cuba has been observed since January, when Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was kidnapped during the U.S. invasion of Venezuela.
Venezuela and Cuba have been close allies for many years, and Cuba has largely relied on cheap oil from Venezuela.
