One-Fifth of the World’s Oil is Locked in a Bag: Iran Mines the Exit from the Persian Gulf

U.S. intelligence has received information that Iran has started mining the Strait of Hormuz, CBS reports.

CNN reports details about Iran starting to mine the Strait of Hormuz.

The network states that only a few dozen mines have been set so far, but Tehran still controls most of its small boats and mine sweepers, which means it can deploy hundreds more in the waters.

Trump has already commented on this information.

"If Iran has placed mines in the Strait of Hormuz, and we have no reports that they have done so, we want them removed immediately! If for any reason the mines have been laid and they are not removed immediately, the military consequences for Iran will be at a level that has never been seen before. If they remove what may have been placed, that will be a huge step in the right direction!" he wrote on his social media.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), in the first half of 2025, 20.9 million barrels of oil passed daily through the Strait of Hormuz from the Persian Gulf — about a quarter of all global maritime oil trade and one-fifth of total oil consumption overall.

About 20% of the world’s LNG exports also pass through there.
