TWZ: Russian submarine ‘Varshavyanka’ sank due to U.S. strike on base in Iran.
The Iranian submarine of the ‘Varshavyanka’ project (NATO designation - Kilo class) produced in Russia sank due to a U.S. strike on the Bandar Abbas naval base in Iran. This was reported by TWZ.
The American specialized portal analyzed satellite images of Iranian facilities following the latest wave of U.S. strikes. "The only Iranian Kilo-class submarine, the most modern of Iran's submarines, which was anchored at the base, also appears to have sunk, and a large fire trace is visible near its mooring location at the pier," the publication states.
It also notes that earlier the U.S. Central Command had reported a strike on "the most combat-capable Iranian submarine." "Combined with losses sustained earlier in the war, it seems that the Iranian navy is now practically a memory," the publication concludes.
Previously, the publication, citing satellite images, reported that the Russian-made ‘Varshavyanka’ submarine had survived the U.S. strike on the Bandar Abbas naval base in Iran.
At that time, the USNI News portal, citing the U.S. Central Command, reported that the American side struck the base housing Iranian submarines of the ‘Varshavyanka’ project.
The Iranian side had three diesel-electric submarines of the Tareq project (modernized submarines of the ‘Varshavyanka’ project), two Fateh-class submarines, and several Ghadir-class mini-submarines. The Tareq-class submarine was the largest and most advanced type of Iranian submarine. The submarines were 74 meters long, capable of carrying 18 torpedoes, and could remain underwater for days.
