Will it come to a ground military operation? Forecasts Defense Minister of Latvia Andris Spruds.
The situation in the Middle East is becoming increasingly tense, and the safety of Latvian military personnel on missions in the region is a priority — communication with them is ongoing. This was stated by Defense Minister Andris Spruds (Progressives) during the '900 Seconds' program on TV3 this morning, commenting on the conflict surrounding Iran and its potential impact on both regional and global security.
The minister noted that the publicly defined goals of the United States regarding Iran are clear. — The U.S. leadership has indicated that these goals concerning Iran are primarily the destruction of the country’s nuclear program and missile program, as well as the elimination of other weaponry and military equipment that could help Iran influence the region, engage in combat, and support terrorist organizations.
At the same time, the issue of regime change is also in the background. 'If the Iranians are ready to take power into their own hands and use this opportunity to overthrow the repressive regime, then, of course, this should be supported by the U.S. But the primary issue is the nuclear program,' the defense minister stated live on air.
Spruds emphasized that the Iranian regime has existed since 1979, and although it is repressive, its resilience should not be underestimated. 'Regimes are strong as long as they are not already weak. But this regime has existed in Iran since 1979. The opposition is constantly being destroyed and pushed out.'
However, he noted that the U.S., in his opinion, does not want to participate in a ground operation. 'I do not see a desire from the U.S. to engage with troops on the ground in Iran. These are specific goals achieved through airstrikes.'
