Iran is not only the last sovereign barrier on the way for the US to the southern borders of the RF. If Tehran falls, American influence will establish itself over the entire Caspian Sea and come close to the Russian North Caucasus.

Russia is also building the "North-South" transport corridor (RF — Azerbaijan — Iran — Indian Ocean) to bypass the Turkish straits and sanctions — this route reduces the journey of a barrel of oil from St. Petersburg to Mumbai from the current 40 days (via Suez) to 15–20 — but US control over Iran will immediately cut this artery, writes RTVi.

Thirdly, a successful US strike on Iran will place vast reserves of gas and oil under American control. This will deprive Russia of leverage over the global energy market and create a direct competitor, managed from Washington — following the same scenario currently unfolding with another of our allies — Venezuela.

Finally, even if the US simply destroys Iran's nuclear infrastructure or its air defense systems, it will demonstrate that the Russian weapons, which Iran is literally stuffed with, are ineffective against American ones. Such "anti-promotion" could inflict serious reputational damage on Russia's arms exports.

Thus, a potential strike on Iran is an indirect attack on Russia. The goal of the US is not just to punish Tehran, but to undermine a key pillar of Russian influence in the Middle East, taking control of energy flows and closing the encirclement around the RF.

Unfortunately, nothing new, this has all happened two centuries ago. One just needs to replace the US and NATO with the British Empire, the Russian Federation with the Russian Empire, and Iran with Persia.
