NYT: The U.S. intends to strike Iran to make Tehran concede in negotiations.

The U.S. intends to use a possible strike on Iran to compel Tehran to make concessions during negotiations over its nuclear program. This was reported by The New York Times (NYT) citing American officials.

"U.S. officials say they doubt Iran is ready to strike a deal, but note that the strategy of targeted strikes would be to force the leaders to make concessions," the publication states.

It is specified that the key objective of a possible strike is to destroy Iran's nuclear facilities. However, a potential Washington strike on Tehran also carries symbolic significance. According to a source from the publication, a U.S. strike on Iran would allow President Donald Trump to declare victory over an old enemy.

"But senior officials also hope that it will force Iran to abandon its uranium enrichment program, although some current and former officials doubt the success of the endeavor," the authors of the report emphasize.

Earlier, it became known that the U.S. wants Israel to strike Iran first, after which U.S. forces would join the combat operations. It was reported that an Israeli strike would provoke retaliatory actions from Iran, which would serve as a pretext for U.S. support of a strike on Iran.
