Two Potential Successors to Donald Trump as President of the United States Named

American President Donald Trump is consulting with his inner circle about a successor, choosing between Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, several sources told Axios.

According to them, discussions about this have become more frequent. All five sources who shared the content of their conversations with Trump warned that the president's frequent praise of Rubio is not related to Trump's cooling towards Vance.

"The president's dream for 2028 is a Vance-Rubio tandem, and to be clear, Vance at the helm <...> But would Trump be satisfied with a Rubio-Vance tandem? Absolutely," said a presidential advisor, who Trump recently asked for his opinion on the future leader of the Republican Party.

As the portal writes, Vance has political advisors who will form the backbone of his presidential campaign if he runs for president in 2028. However, Rubio does not have such infrastructure, but he has stated that he would support Vance's candidacy.

At the same time, the vice president has a significant disadvantage in Trump's mindset — their positions. Rubio, due to his positions, appears in the news much more often than Vance. "And Trump eagerly consumes the news," Axios writes.

Partly, this is a problem for Rubio as well. According to sources, it would be difficult for the Secretary of State and National Security Advisor to transition from such two important posts to the position of vice president. Trump knows this, and some advisors suggest that one reason he continually elevates Rubio is to encourage him to run alongside Vance.

However, Trump's advisors say that the president will not fully commit to a successor in order not to distract the team from their current work and because he does not want to appear as if he is losing power.

In early polls among Republicans for the 2028 primaries, Vance significantly outpaces Rubio and any other Republican. A University of New Hampshire poll of voters in the first-in-the-nation primaries showed that Vance has 53% of hypothetical votes, while Rubio has only 7%.
