Trump believes that the best candidates for this position are Vice President J.D. Vance and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.
U.S. President Donald Trump is preparing a successor for the 2028 election and is increasingly discussing this issue with advisors. According to Axios, Trump is more frequently asking in passing who should lead the list of Republican candidates for the presidency in 2028.
At the same time, Trump believes that the best candidates for this position are Vice President J.D. Vance and National Security Advisor Marco Rubio.
As the publication notes, Trump prefers Vance, but he is also increasingly praising Rubio, both publicly and privately.
"Vance-Rubio is the perfect presidential tandem for 2028 – and to be clear, Vance at the top," said a Trump advisor whom the president recently asked to share his opinion on the candidates for nomination.
Vance has political advisors who, if he runs, are expected to form the core of the 2028 presidential campaign. Rubio does not have such infrastructure – and he has made it clear that he is fine with Vance's candidacy. According to sources, Rubio personally conveyed this to Vance.
Last year, Trump made it clear that Vance is "most likely" his presumed successor because, "fairly speaking, he is the vice president." But Trump added that he prefers Rubio to "team up with J.D." on the ballot.
At the same time, sources note that it will be difficult for Rubio to transition from his high-ranking positions to the vice presidency. Trump knows this, and some advisors suggest that one reason he continually promotes Rubio is to encourage him to collaborate with Vance.
Advisors say that Trump will not fully determine the successor because he wants his team to think about their current positions, and he does not want to appear as though he is losing power.
Trump's Third Term
The Constitution of the United States of America explicitly prohibits anyone from being elected to the presidency more than twice, meaning a total of no more than eight years.
Some of Trump's supporters, including Congressman Andy Ogles, have proposed amending the Constitution to allow a third term for a president with non-consecutive terms.
However, media outlets have repeatedly reported that Trump is looking for loopholes that would help him bypass the 22nd Amendment.
