Will Europe fall into a new dependency on the United States due to LNG imports? In 2021, the European Union received about 50% of its natural gas from Russia, mainly through pipelines. However, after the start of the war, the United States increased its liquefied natural gas supplies to Europe fourfold, reports Deutsche Welle. Currently, the EU receives 57% of its LNG from the U.S., and experts predict that this share will grow to 80% by 2030. "American LNG is the most expensive, yet European companies continue to sign contracts," notes the Institute for Energy Economics, Financial Analysis (IEEFA).

This deal "effectively ties the EU's energy supply to a single supplier, jeopardizes energy security, and puts pressure on plans to reduce gas consumption," IEEFA believes.
Threats from U.S. President Donald Trump to impose tariffs on EU countries that do not support his position on Greenland prompted Brussels to reconsider its strategy. At the end of January, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing Dan Jørgensen urged Europe to "pay more attention to its own clean and secure energy." An investment agreement was reached to develop offshore wind energy. Additionally, Jørgensen suggested sourcing gas from Canada, Qatar, and Algeria.
IEEFA believes that Europe's energy future could change. In particular, if the EU adheres to its plans for transitioning to clean energy, the demand for gas will decline. And then agreements with the U.S. on LNG, based on "formal but non-binding agreements," may not materialize, experts say.
