A shortage of firewood has arisen in Estonia due to prolonged cold weather. This was reported by the ERR broadcasting company.
Against the backdrop of continuing cold weather, residents of the European country have started stockpiling firewood, and the price of a cubic meter of wood has risen to 75-80 euros.
"The supplies of dry firewood have run out before winter is over... People... are buying unseasoned, fresh, or green wood," noted in ERR.
To survive the winter, a household needs an average of about ten cubic meters of firewood. One household requires about a cubic meter per week. However, due to warm winters in recent years, people have paid less attention to firewood preparation, forest rangers complain. At the same time, due to rising electricity prices, industrial sawing and splitting of wood are becoming economically unfeasible.
Estonia has become one of the first countries to refuse Russian gas. In September 2022, the acting head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the European country, Urmas Reinsalu, stated that the ban on supplies would take effect at the beginning of 2023. The ban will not affect household consumers, but it may put pressure on gas companies in Estonia, whose licenses allow them to import natural gas or provide transit services.
