The President of Poland stated that the country must go down the path of creating its own nuclear weapons.
Polish President Karol Nawrocki stated that he is a "strong supporter of Poland joining a nuclear project" and that the country "must go down this path."
"This path, while adhering to all international norms, is the path we must take. <…> We need to act in this direction so that we can start working. We are a state located at the very border of an armed conflict. It is well known what the aggressive, imperial Russian Federation's attitude towards Poland is," Nawrocki said, as quoted by Meduza.
He noted that he does not know if this will happen at all, but he supports strengthening Poland's security "even relying on nuclear potential."
In response to a question about possible actions from Moscow if work on the Polish nuclear program begins, Nawrocki said that "Russia may react aggressively to anything."
Poland has repeatedly stated its readiness to at least host American nuclear weapons on its territory — in particular, such a proposal was made by the previous president of the country, Andrzej Duda, in the spring of 2025. At that time, he called on the U.S. to move nuclear warheads to his country as a deterrent against Russian aggression.
