The conservative Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), led by Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, secured two-thirds of the seats in the early elections for the lower house of parliament held on Sunday, according to official results published on Tuesday, LETA reports citing AFP.
The LDP received 315 seats in the lower house, where there are a total of 465 deputies. In the previous convocation, the LDP had 198 seats, while an absolute majority requires 233 mandates.
The LDP's coalition partner — the conservative party 'Ishin' (Japan Innovation Party) — received 36 seats, thus the ruling coalition will control 351 seats in the lower house of parliament. Previously, 'Ishin' had 34 seats.
The anti-immigrant right-wing populist party 'Sanseito' increased its representation from two to 15 seats.
The centrist reformist alliance, formed by the Constitutional Democratic Party and the former LDP partner — the Clean Politics Party ('Komeito'), suffered a heavy defeat, reducing its number of deputies from 167 to 49.
A two-thirds majority allows the government to ignore decisions of the upper house of parliament, where the ruling coalition is in the minority.
This also gives Takaichi the opportunity to attempt to amend the constitution, which she has already stated.
"This is the beginning of a difficult task — to make Japan stronger and richer," said the 64-year-old Takaichi at a press conference on Monday.
"We believe that society has shown understanding and support for our calls for urgent political change," the Prime Minister stated.
In October, Takaichi became the first woman to hold the position of Prime Minister of Japan. In mid-January, she announced early elections for the lower house of parliament, hoping to leverage the high level of government support to obtain a stronger mandate.
Although Takaichi became the first woman in the highest office in the country, she has not shown interest in expanding the role of women in Japanese politics, which is male-dominated. The number of women in the lower house of parliament decreased from 73 to 68.
