WSJ: Xi Jinping's deputy is accused of transferring nuclear weapons data to the U.S.
Zhang Yuxia, the Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China (CMC) under Xi Jinping, has been accused of transferring technical data about the country's nuclear weapons program to the United States. According to The Wall Street Journal, he is also suspected of accepting bribes and selling the position of Minister of Defense.
Currently, Zhang Yuxia is under investigation for abuse of power. In particular, it involves receiving large sums of money in exchange for promotions within the agency that oversees research, development, and procurement of military equipment.
The official has long been considered a trusted confidant of Xi Jinping and his right-hand man.
According to the country's Ministry of Defense, in addition to Zhang Yuxia, the Chief of the Joint Staff of the CMC, General Liu Zhenli, is also involved. The ministry clarified that the officials are suspected of "serious violations of discipline and law." However, the details of the criminal cases have not been disclosed by the ministry.
Just hours before the official announcement of the investigations into the officials, a closed briefing took place with the participation of the top military leadership of the People's Liberation Army of China.
