Europe wants to fly over Russian airspace again, but not to the country.

The head of the German airline Lufthansa, Carsten Spohr, expressed a desire to fly over the Russian Federation in 2026. "Let’s hope for a possible opening of Russian airspace for everyone," he stated in his New Year’s message.

The reason for the demand is the absence of restrictions for flights over the territory of the Russian Federation for Chinese airlines, which attract customers with competitive ticket prices and flight speed. Meanwhile, European carriers have been forced to reduce air traffic to Asia since 2022 and pay more for fuel due to circumventing closed airspace.
