Ice chunks up to 10 meters high have formed near Hamburg against the backdrop of January's cold. Icebreakers are operating on the Elbe.
At a temperature of minus 11 degrees, real icebergs have formed at the bridge over the Elbe near Geesthacht heading towards Lower Saxony. Despite the frost, many locals took a walk here over the weekend, admiring the masses of ice and capturing and sharing footage online.
For shipping services, these beauties are a real headache. "We have never seen anything like this before," says Andreas Schulz, head of the special fleet of the Waterways and Shipping Administration (WSA). "The ice rises a good ten meters from the bottom of the Elbe."
