U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Saturday the introduction of a 10% customs tariff for several European countries and threatened to raise it to 25% until an agreement is reached on the transfer of Denmark's autonomous territory — Greenland, LETA reports citing AFP and BBC.

Starting February 1, Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany will be subject to a 10% tariff on all goods shipped to the U.S., Trump stated on his social media platform Truth Social.

"On June 1, 2026, the tariff will be increased to 25%. This tariff will remain in effect until a full and final agreement on the acquisition of Greenland is reached," he wrote.

According to Trump, the U.S. has subsidized Denmark and the European Union for many years without imposing tariffs on them.

He added that "it is time for Denmark to give back."

"At stake is world peace! China wants Greenland, and Denmark can do nothing," Trump wrote, claiming that Greenland is protected only by two dog sleds.

He continued that Denmark, France, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and Germany "are heading to Greenland with unknown intentions" and are playing "a very dangerous game."

"Tough measures" need to be taken so that this "potentially dangerous situation ends quickly and without doubt," Trump added.

Trump and White House officials have repeatedly stated that Greenland should be part of the U.S., not ruling out the possibility of using military force to achieve this goal.
