Kyiv Court Sets Large Bail for Ex-Prime Minister Tymoshenko

The Kyiv court set bail for former Prime Minister of Ukraine and leader of the Batkivshchyna party Yulia Tymoshenko at 33.3 million hryvnias (approximately 655,000 euros) in a case involving bribery of parliament deputies, LETA reports citing BBC.

Tymoshenko rejects all accusations and states that the new criminal prosecution is not the "first political order during her years in politics." According to her, the criminal case may be part of a campaign ahead of the elections. "It seems the elections are much closer than it appeared. And someone decided to start getting rid of competitors," the ex-prime minister said. After the court session, Tymoshenko announced her intention to appeal the court's decision; however, if it remains in force, she will have to seek help from friends and colleagues to raise the necessary amount. Ukrainian anti-corruption agencies reported on January 13 that they had identified the involvement of one of the leaders of a parliamentary faction in corruption—bribes were offered to deputies for voting on bills.
