19FortyFive: the long flights of the B-2 aircraft are ensured by the onboard toilet and kitchen.
The B-2 Spirit strategic bomber of the U.S. Air Force can stay in the air for dozens of hours thanks to the presence of an onboard toilet and kitchen. The main 'weapon' of the aircraft was named in a publication by 19FortyFive.
"Although these amenities are rarely found on combat aircraft, they are not a luxury but a strategic tool that ensures extreme endurance and global reach through human resilience," the publication states.
The amenities allow the two-person crew to relatively comfortably spend up to 30 hours in the aircraft's cockpit. According to the author, without a toilet, the flight duration of the B-2 would be limited by human capabilities rather than the amount of fuel onboard. There is also a compartment on the B-2 for storing water and food.
The publication added that the designers ensured a minimal level of comfort for the crew. Pilots can adjust the lighting and set the position of their seats. As the publication notes, this allows the crew to remain alert until the most critical stage—the target attack.
