The prototype of the new M1E3 Abrams tank with an unmanned turret was shown in a photo.

The U.S. Army has unveiled the preliminary prototype of the next generation M1E3 Abrams tank for the first time. The first photo of the test sample with an unmanned turret caught the attention of the publication Defence Industry Europe.

The presented sample is used to test new technical solutions during the work on the final version of the M1E3. Therefore, the prototype is largely similar to the serial 'Abrams'. U.S. Army representatives emphasized that the final version of the vehicle will differ significantly from the prototype.

The tank features an upgraded turret from the M1A1 modification. It has lost hatches and observation devices, as the crew of the M1E3 is located in the hull. An optical-electronic station, Leonardo S3, designed for observation and targeting, has been installed on the roof of the turret. A small opening can also be seen near the gun, which may house the gunner's sight.

Auxiliary armament is mounted on the remotely operated combat module EOS R400 Mk2. The installation combines an automatic grenade launcher Mk19, a machine gun, and the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system. The author suggested that such a set of weapons is intended only to demonstrate the capabilities of the module. The main weapon, a 120-millimeter caliber gun, has been complemented by an autoloader, which allowed for a reduction in crew size.

The front part of the hull has been redesigned to accommodate three crew members. Two large hatches for tankers have appeared on the roof. Observers also noted the low ground clearance of the M1E3, which may indicate the integration of a hydropneumatic suspension.
