At a closed meeting with members of the House of Representatives, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that the White House plans to buy Greenland. The day before, the White House stated that it may use the military "in the Greenland matter," DW reports.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump plans to propose to Denmark the purchase of Greenland. This was reported on Wednesday, January 7, citing sources in the country's leadership by The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times.

According to their information, at a recent closed meeting with members of the House of Representatives, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that recent statements by President Donald Trump do not indicate an imminent military invasion. The goal of the White House's threats is to force Denmark to sell the island. As reported by The New York Times, Trump has instructed his administration staff to develop a plan for the purchase of Greenland.

Previously, the White House stated that "the purchase of Greenland is a national security priority," which is "crucial for deterring adversaries" in the Arctic. Therefore, the use of the U.S. military to achieve this foreign policy goal is "always one of the options available to the Commander-in-Chief."

The U.S. Wants to Take Control of Greenland by the End of the Year

The day before, Politico reported, citing experts and sources in Washington, that the U.S. intends to establish control over Greenland by the end of 2026. In particular, the Trump administration may attempt to organize a "covert influence campaign" to significantly change the political balance on the island and bribe local politicians.

The U.S. presidential administration is already preparing a draft agreement on free association, which Donald Trump will propose to the authorities of Greenland, bypassing official Copenhagen. Under such a treaty, U.S. armed forces may gain full freedom of action on the island in exchange for duty-free trade. The U.S. has already concluded such agreements with the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau - small states in the Pacific Ocean.

Danish authorities call the pressure on Greenland unacceptable and emphasize that the Arctic region "wants to determine its own future" without interference from other countries.

In a recent statement, leaders of seven European countries expressed support for the island. "Greenland belongs to its people. Only Denmark and Greenland have the right to decide issues concerning Denmark and Greenland," the joint statement signed by French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as well as the Prime Ministers of Italy Giorgia Meloni, Poland Donald Tusk, Spain Pedro Sánchez, the United Kingdom Keir Starmer, and Denmark Mette Frederiksen, reads.
