BNS: In a year, 19 streets with names reminiscent of the USSR were renamed in Lithuania.
In 2025, Lithuania renamed 19 streets whose names reminded of the Soviet past. This was reported by the BNS publication, citing the Republic's Registration Center.
It is specified that in 2025, the changes most often affected streets named after Lithuanian and Soviet poets Liudas Gira (1884-1946) and Salomėja Nėris (1904-1945). Ten streets were renamed in honor of Nėris and four streets in honor of Gira. It is noted that the fight against the names of writers began after the decision of the de-Sovietization commission. It established that Gira and Nėris allegedly participated in strengthening Soviet power and promoted communist ideas.
It is noted that there are still about 100 streets in Lithuania that remind of the USSR. The work on renaming them has been ongoing for several years. Last year, new names were assigned to 40 streets.
