A man has been arrested in Japan on suspicion of a knife and chemical attack, allegedly involving bleach, that occurred on Friday at a rubber factory, resulting in 15 people being injured, officials said, according to LETA citing AP.
Eight people were hospitalized after a man stabbed them at the Yokohama Rubber Company factory in the city of Mishima, Shizuoka Prefecture, firefighters reported.
The condition of five of the injured is assessed as serious, and no information has been received about the condition of the others.
The Shizuoka Prefectural Police reported that a 38-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder at the factory, but no further details were provided.
Seven more people were injured after bleach was poured on them during the attack, firefighters said.
Violent crimes are rare in Japan. The country has a low murder rate and some of the strictest gun control laws in the world.
However, knife and gun attacks do occur from time to time in Japan. For instance, in 2022, the country was shocked by the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
In October, a Japanese citizen was sentenced to death for an attack in which he used a firearm and a knife to kill four people, including two police officers, in 2023.
In May, a 43-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after he carried out a knife attack at a subway station in Tokyo.
