The U.S. President believes that the parties have come closer to an agreement but urged Kyiv to act faster. In his opinion, the delay in the process by Kyiv affects Russia's position.
U.S. President Donald Trump stated that negotiations to end the war in Ukraine "are approaching some result." At the same time, he expressed the opinion that Kyiv should act more quickly. Trump made this statement at an event in the Oval Office on Thursday, December 18.
The American leader also said that "every time the Ukrainians delay too much, Russia changes its mind." This was his response to a question about negotiations between U.S. and Russian representatives, which are expected to continue over the upcoming weekend.
According to the White House, U.S. special representatives Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner plan to meet with the Russian delegation in Miami. These contacts are seen as part of further attempts to reach an agreement between Russia and Ukraine to end the war.
Contacts with Kyiv and Moscow's position
On the past Sunday and Monday, Witkoff and Kushner held talks with the Ukrainian delegation in Berlin. According to the American representatives, after these negotiations, they got the impression that the parties are not that far from a possible agreement.
At the same time, the key issue related to Russia's demand for control over part of Ukrainian territory remains unresolved.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Thursday that Moscow is preparing for contacts with Washington to understand how the American plan for Ukrainian settlement has changed after negotiations involving European countries and Ukrainian authorities.
