European leaders are alarmed by Russian President Vladimir Putin's statements about retaliation for the theft of Russian assets, and this idea has become even more concerning, writes the Financial Times (FT).

“Moscow's threats to take retaliatory measures against Western companies in response to the EU's decision to indefinitely freeze Russian assets have heightened concerns in some European capitals,” the article states.

This particularly concerns countries that are wary of using these funds to support Ukraine — Belgium, Italy, and Austria.

Earlier, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban mentioned a letter to Russian President Vladimir Putin, in which he inquired about Moscow's possible reaction to the EU's confiscation of Russian assets. According to him, in the response letter, Moscow warned of a “decisive response using all instruments of international law.”
