France ranks second with €71.65 billion, and Italy comes third with over €43 billion.
Overall in Europe, the UK leads, where PwC (Price Waterhouse Coopers - one of the largest international audit and consulting firms) forecasts a 3.5% increase in Christmas spending, despite a slow start to the holiday shopping season. Rising prices due to inflation are making gifts more expensive: the annual inflation rate in the eurozone was 2.2% in November.
The most popular gift categories remain cosmetics, fashion items, and electronics. For example, in the Czech Republic, cosmetics and toys are in high demand, in Poland - jewelry and watches, in Spain - second-hand items, and in Italy - household appliances.
Experts remind about safety: nearly 96% of checked toys on popular online platforms did not meet EU standards, with 86% identified as having serious risks, including small parts and powerful magnets. New rules have been in effect in the EU since October: a digital passport for online toy sales and a ban on harmful chemicals.
