Sydney fruit seller, Muslim Ahmed al-Ahmed, according to his family, has never held a weapon in his hands. However, he risked to single-handedly neutralize a terrorist, took the rifle from him, and thus saved many lives.
He is 43 years old, does not know how to handle weapons, and runs a fruit shop. Little is known about the man who disarmed one of the shooters in Sydney with his bare hands.
The feat of Ahmed al-Ahmed, a father of two, was captured on video. The man in the white t-shirt in the footage is him. Here, al-Ahmed sees the shooters from behind, runs up to one of them, grabs the rifle, saving many lives.
Then al-Ahmed aims the weapon at the attacker, who flees, while the man leans the rifle against a tree, raising his hands and signaling to the police that he is not involved in the attack. In those moments, the hero receives two injuries from the second shooter - to his leg and wrist.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed personal gratitude to the man. "We witnessed the act of a brave man, who turned out to be a Muslim, and I honor him. He prevented one of the terrorists from killing innocent Jews," Netanyahu stated.
Netanyahu clarified that he warned his Australian counterpart Anthony Albanese that the policies being pursued in his country "fuel anti-Semitism." Israeli authorities are investigating possible masterminds behind the attack, which has been classified by the police as a terrorist act.
Al-Ahmed was taken to the hospital, where he has already undergone surgery. His family hopes he will recover soon.
The terrorist attack in Sydney resulted in 12 deaths, including one of the shooters; about 30 were injured. Unknown men in black opened fire on members of the local Jewish community gathered at Bondi Beach to celebrate Hanukkah.
