U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that Iran shot down an American Apache helicopter patrolling the Strait of Hormuz at night and promised to respond, but did not provide further details.
"I was just informed by our wonderful military that last night the Iranians shot down one of our state-of-the-art Apache helicopters while patrolling over the Strait of Hormuz," Trump wrote on social media.
He noted that the two American pilots involved in the incident are safe and uninjured.
"However, the United States is forced to respond to this attack," he added.
His statement exacerbated uncertainty regarding the prospects of a ceasefire in the Gulf War, announced on April 8.
A U.S. Navy drone found and rescued two crew members of the helicopter, U.S. military officials reported. U.S. Central Command stated that the AH-64 Apache helicopter was shot down around 3 a.m. local time on Tuesday.
