Admiral Jenkins: Britain is close to ceding the Atlantic to Russia.
The United Kingdom is close to ceding dominance in the Atlantic to Russia, stated the Commander of the Royal Navy, First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Gwyn Jenkins, according to The New York Times.
At a conference in London, Jenkins noted that the advantages the country enjoyed in the Atlantic after the Cold War and World War II are under threat.
"We are holding on, but not by much," added the head of the Royal Navy.
Jenkins urged Britain to take more active measures to prevent this loss.
According to him, Russia has invested "billions" in naval capabilities, particularly in the Northern Fleet. The activity of Russian submarines in the Atlantic has increased by 30 percent over the past two years.
And despite the fact that the United Kingdom can counter Russia with autonomous underwater gliders capable of detecting enemy submarines, the Royal Navy will struggle without rapid transformation and support from NATO countries.
