Ukraine cannot be forced to give up territories - Baerbock

Former German Foreign Minister and now President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock stated that Ukraine cannot be forced to give up its territories for the sake of a peace agreement, warning that encouraging aggression will only lead to new wars, LETA reports citing DPA.

"You condemn the act of aggression, not encourage it. Those who encourage aggression will receive an even greater war instead of peace," Baerbock stated in an interview published on Sunday in the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Russian President Vladimir Putin demands that Ukraine withdraw its troops from parts of Donbas that are still under Kyiv's control.

The United States is also pressuring Ukraine, insisting on concessions, claiming that otherwise the war will not end. However, Ukraine continues to refuse.

Baerbock spoke cautiously about a possible role for the UN in ensuring a ceasefire. "First, there must be a ceasefire and a peace agreement, and only then can we discuss how to achieve that," she said. "But to achieve this, Russia must be ready to end the war."
