Drones Attack Submarine Base: French Open Fire on Them

French naval personnel opened fire on drones spotted over the location of French nuclear submarines on Thursday, Le Monde reports.

Five drones were spotted on Thursday evening over the Ile-Long submarine base in Brittany, western France, the gendarmerie reported.

This is a strategic military facility where submarines armed with ballistic missiles are stationed. A no-fly zone for drones is in effect in this area.

A counter-drone system and search operations were deployed. Military personnel responsible for the base's security fired several shots at the drones. It is unknown whether any of them were shot down.

The Ile-Long base provides maintenance for four French nuclear submarines, at least one of which is constantly at sea to maintain nuclear deterrence.

According to French media reports, drones had already been spotted in the area last month, although not directly over the base.

This incident occurred after a series of recent drone incursions into NATO airspace, with unmanned aerial vehicles flying around important military facilities and civilian infrastructure across Europe in recent months, particularly in Belgium, Germany, Denmark, and Norway.
