The death toll from the floods and landslides on the island of Sumatra in Indonesia has risen to 753, the National Disaster Management Agency reported on Wednesday, according to LETA citing DPA.

2,600 people were injured, and 650 are still reported missing.

Heavy downpours that caused river overflows, landslides, and flooding of entire areas struck Sumatra a week ago.

Rescue and humanitarian operations continue on Wednesday. They involve the armed forces, local emergency services, and community volunteers who are searching for the missing, clearing blocked roads, and delivering food, water, and medical supplies.

The death toll may still rise as rescuers are just now reaching the most affected areas.

The disaster destroyed 3,600 homes, and another 5,800 homes sustained moderate or minor damage.
