The UN Security Council on Monday approved a resolution, the main provisions of which are based on the peace plan for the Gaza Strip proposed by US President Donald Trump, LETA reports citing RFE/RL.
The resolution proposed by the United States provides for the creation of International Stabilization Forces, which will include military personnel from several Arab countries, as well as the formation of a Council of Peace that will temporarily govern the territory and will be headed by Trump.
The resolution also notes that the establishment of a Palestinian state is possible upon the fulfillment of a number of preconditions.
The resolution was adopted with the support of 13 members of the Security Council, with two abstentions — Russia and China.
Algerian UN representative Amar Benjama, who represented Arab countries at the negotiations, thanked Trump for his role in achieving a ceasefire in Gaza, emphasizing that a just peace in the Middle East is impossible without the establishment of a Palestinian state.
According to the resolution, the international contingent will be responsible for the demilitarization of the Gaza Strip, the disarmament of armed groups, ensuring security in the territory of Gaza, and guarding its borders.
On Monday, the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas criticized the resolution, stating that the international contingent would not be a neutral force and would "side with the occupiers" if it attempted to disarm them.
The resolution stipulates that the International Stabilization Forces will be able to use all necessary means, including weapons, to carry out their mission.
As soon as control of the Gaza Strip is transferred to the international contingent, the Israeli army will leave the territory.
