The government has prepared a draft law for the next increase in the retirement age in Estonia in 2028 – to 65 years and three months, ERR reports.
Currently, Estonians retire at the age of 64 years and nine months, and in 2027 they will be able to retire at 65 years and one month.
In the future, this issue will also take into account not the year of birth, but the person's age in the current calendar year.
The Ministry of Social Affairs noted that considering the trend of an aging population, special attention is also paid to keeping people over the age of 55 in the labor market.
At the same time, the authorities remind that the retirement age in Estonia is currently lower than in many Western European countries – for example, in Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands it is 67 years, while Denmark plans to gradually raise it to 70 years. Thus, there is still room for growth, meaning delaying the start of pension payments.
In Estonia, to maintain the stability of the solidarity pension system, the retirement age has been reviewed and raised four times since 1994. The last decision was that starting in 2027, the retirement age will change in accordance with the projected life expectancy.
As of January 1, 2025, there were 327,000 pensioners in Estonia. It is projected that by 2060, their number will increase to 340,000.
