The German Government Agreed: No More Benefits for Ukrainian Refugees

Ukrainian refugees arriving in Germany after April 1, 2025, will no longer receive benefits. According to media reports, this decision was made by the country's government.

Many refugees from Ukraine will receive less government support from Germany in the future. According to the newspaper Bild, the reform will affect all Ukrainians who arrived in Germany after April 1, 2025. In the future, they will be treated as regular asylum seekers, which means a reduction in benefits.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) and Federal Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Hubertus Heil (SPD) have agreed on this regulation, thereby abolishing the previous special status for refugees from Ukraine following Russia's large-scale invasion.

As a result, Ukrainians will not receive any compensation. The reason is too much bureaucracy, as stated by one senior coalition member.

How Many Ukrainian Refugees Receive Benefits for Citizens?

About half of the Ukrainian refugees living in Germany currently receive benefits for citizens, although many of them can work in principle. Until now, this has granted them special rights compared to other groups of refugees.

According to the coalition agreement between the SPD and CDU/CSU, Ukrainians who arrived and will arrive in Germany from April 1, 2025, will only receive lower benefits that regular asylum seekers are entitled to: approximately 110 euros per month for one adult. However, Ukrainians will gain immediate access to the labor market.
