Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson, who is visiting Estonia, and Prime Minister Kristen Mihal stated at a meeting that the sending of Swedish prisoners to Estonia is part of practical cooperation between the two countries in the field of security, writes Postimees.
According to Kristersson, the arrival of prisoners in Estonia is an example of practical cooperation between the two countries, aimed at reducing the burden on Swedish prisons; however, decisions are made independently by each country.
"We do not interfere in Estonia's internal affairs in any way. Of course, the principle is the same as in Sweden: we make our decisions, and Estonia makes its own. If we find ourselves in a situation where we can help each other, then I think our main goal and instinct is to help," said the Prime Minister of Sweden.
The Estonian public has expressed concern and political disagreement with the plan to accept prisoners, but Kristersson emphasized that the prisoners being sent to Estonia are not among the most dangerous.
"We will keep the most dangerous ones with us. These prisoners [who will arrive in Estonia] will not be free to move around; they must remain locked up in prison. The numbers are clearly outlined in the agreement, and we have no other plans. We are absolutely transparent on this issue," he assured. "I see this as a good form of cooperation that highlights the closeness of the two countries in the field of security."
