On Wednesday, the U.S. government shutdown enters its 36th day, making it the longest in history, reports LETA citing DPA.

The previous record of 35 days was set during Donald Trump's first term in 2018.

The duration of the current shutdown depends on whether Republicans and Democrats in Congress can reach an agreement on the federal budget for the next fiscal year.

The Senate is expected to continue voting on Wednesday, while no session of the House of Representatives is scheduled for this week, although it may be convened depending on circumstances.

Federal spending is effectively halted, putting the operations of many agencies and departments at risk. Only those deemed critically important continue to operate as usual.

Many federal government employees have not been paid since October.
