The U.S. will conduct a test launch of the Minuteman III ICBM without a warhead.
The U.S. will conduct a scheduled test of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) without a warhead. The test launch will take place from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California on November 5.
"The operational test launch of the Minuteman III ICBM without a destructive element is scheduled between 11:01 PM and 5:01 AM Pacific Time on November 4 from the northern part of the base," the statement on the complex's website said.
The publication emphasized that the schedule for planned tests was made "years ago." The purpose of the launch is to verify the effectiveness of the ICBM systems.
The LGM-30G Minuteman III missile was adopted by the U.S. Air Force in 1970. It remains the only silo-based ICBM in the U.S. arsenal. The missile has a range of 13,000 kilometers. During several modernization programs, the Minuteman missiles received new nuclear warheads, a modernized propulsion system, and an updated guidance system.
