Pashinyan: the return of Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh would pose a threat to peace.

The potential return of Armenians to Nagorno-Karabakh, which has come under the control of Azerbaijan, would escalate tensions in the region and pose a threat to the peace achieved between the two republics. This was stated by Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, as reported by the local publication Aysor.

The head of government emphasized that this issue should not be on the agenda in the foreseeable future. Otherwise, Pashinyan warned, the efforts of the two countries to establish relations would be undermined. This is not in the interests of either Armenia or Azerbaijan. "The agenda of returning our sisters and brothers displaced from Nagorno-Karabakh is, in my opinion, dangerous for peace," he stated during his speech at the international forum "Orbeli - 2025."

The return of displaced persons to Nagorno-Karabakh would effectively push Armenia and Azerbaijan back to the original conditions of the conflict, Pashinyan added. For this reason, he concluded, this issue needs to be left in the past.

At the same time, Pashinyan had previously noted that, despite the achievement of a peace agreement, mutual claims between Yerevan and Baku have nevertheless remained. Thus, according to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, modern Armenia is a historically Azerbaijani territory. He urged the Armenian authorities not to be afraid of the resettlement of Azerbaijanis to their homeland.

Aliyev also recommended that the leadership of the neighboring country amend its Constitution and enshrine the status of Nagorno-Karabakh as an Azerbaijani region. The Armenian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in turn, noted that this is an internal matter of the republic, and third countries should not dictate how Yerevan should act.
