The soup kitchen of the Tallinn Food Bank prepared the first soup, which began to be distributed to those in need this Saturday at 9 a.m. near the Central Market.
The distribution of soup will be assisted by volunteers from the Order of Malta, and the distribution will take place every Saturday at 9 a.m.
The Food Bank is very pleased to begin a new phase in providing assistance to people. "We are very grateful to everyone who supported us, and thanks to whom the creation of the soup kitchen became possible," the organization noted.
The total cost of design, construction, and equipment amounted to 88,000 euros. Almost half of this amount, 40,000 euros, was raised at the charity dinner 'Lapsed söönuks' ('Children are fed'), organized by leading Estonian restaurants Barbarea, Lee, Moon, and Siidrifarm. Well-known Estonian artists Mihkel Ilus, Kristi Kongi, Jaan Toomik, and Vano Allsalu donated their works for the auction held during the dinner. In addition, Estonian companies Namespace, Harviker, Prike, Nordic Catering, Hansabuss, and others contributed goods and services.
The remaining amount, 48,000 euros, was also obtained through donations. A significant contribution to the construction of the soup kitchen was made by the company ETS NORD, which designed and installed the heat recovery ventilation system free of charge, helping to optimize future operating costs.
The kitchen will operate daily. The soup will primarily be made from products obtained from retail chains and wholesale warehouses to avoid their disposal. Culinary courses will be held weekly, and other services are also planned to be developed.
The Executive Director of the Food Bank of Estonia, Peet Burefein, confirms that the launch of the soup kitchen will expand the organization's capacity to support those in need. "We thank all parties who helped implement this project."
